This book is factual and extremely helpful. In particular, it has one of the best discussions you'll find anywhere on hair systems and hair transplants. Find out what procedures and technologies are out there, the pro's and cons of each and what to watch out for. It's written for you, the consumer, by a veteran New York surgeon who has seen it all. The book is surprisingly candid and loaded with reliable hair loss info.   

The Bald Truth

This one's from the consumer's point of view. The author has tried just about everything. There's a valuable inspection of the latest surgical technique, follicular unit transplantation. He also explores herbs and dietary control of testosterone. Remember, do your research before you buy any products. The book is well-researched and up to date. 

The Patient's Guide To Hair Restoration
by Dr. Robert M. Bernstein
Board certified in both dermatology and hair restoration surgery, Dr. Bernstein is the pioneer of follicular unit hair transplant surgery. This technique has become the gold standard in hair restoration. The book is a must-read if you are considering a hair trasplant.

Physician's Herbal Desk Reference

Herbs for hair loss are popping up everywhere. Use this if you're researching herbs. The book describes thousands of herbs. It gives the official Latin names and lists medical journal articles relevant to each herb. Use the National Library of Medicine to get the journal articles and use the Clinical Crash Course to understand them.

This one's not a book. It's the quarterly publication of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery. It's everything hair restoration, including lively debate among the world's top surgeons. The annual subscription is a bit pricey but if you're seriously considering surgery, you should be reading this.

What's board certified? Board certification is an exhaustive peer-review of a practitioner's qualifications. Hair restoration surgery requires highly specialized skills. There is only one board in the world certifying these skills. The Board has 15 members representing four surgical societies. Passing their test isn't easy, and most hair restoration surgeons are not Board certified.  See the list of Diplomates (Board-certified surgeons).

You'll hear these guys quoted all the time. They're a non-profit group whose membership includes medical, technical and research experts from around the world. They've been educating the media and the public on hair loss issues for a long time. This is a good place to get scientific facts on every type of hair loss and a particularly helpful place to begin your search for a qualified hair systems specialist.

This too is a non-profit organization. They are dedicated to researching this rare and troubling form of hair loss that targets children and adults. There are treatments for it but no cure yet. The Foundation can tell you everything known about it including current treatment options. Their research is expensive and they need donations. Give if you can.

NLM is awesome. And it's online. This is the world's largest biomedical library, with over 3,900 medical journals. Search Medline and PubMed to find titles of articles written on herbs, chemical ingredients, drugs or anything else. To get the articles, contact your local Medical Library and ask them to receive them for you.
